STANDING AT THE THRESHOLD OF GOD'S BEST

JOSHUA 1:ff

By Evangelist Dennis Deese

The Bible says in Proverbs 29:18, "Where there is no vision, the people perish, but he that keepeth the law, happy is he."

And one of my favorite statements and governing themes of life is based upon that verse,

"The value of a vision is that it encourages you to give up at any moment, all that you are, in order to receive all that you can become."

God offers His best to all of us. The question we must answer, knowing that God's best is the best, is what stands between us and God's best?

We can answer that by considering what it takes to discover, receive and keep His best. It requires a:

I. LOVING RELATIONSHIP WITH THE LORD

Ex 33:11 And the LORD spake unto Moses face to face, as a man speaketh unto his friend. And he turned again into the camp: but his servant Joshua, the son of Nun, a young man, departed not out of the tabernacle.

A. Produced by salvation

Am 3:3 Can two walk together, except they be agreed?

Ro 8:7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. {the carnal...: Gr. the minding of the flesh}

Eph 2:13-16 But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ. For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us; Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace; And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby: {thereby: or, in himself}

B. Sustained by spirituality 1:8 Ameditate therein day and night,

Nu 27:18 And the LORD said unto Moses, Take thee Joshua the son of Nun, a man in whom [is] the spirit, and lay thine hand upon him;

Jos 3:5 And Joshua said unto the people, Sanctify yourselves: for to morrow the LORD will do wonders among you.

Jos 8:30 Then Joshua built an altar unto the LORD God of Israel in mount Ebal,

2Pe 1:3 According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that [pertain] unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: {to: or, by}

1Co 2:16 For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ. {may: Gr. shall}

Php 2:5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:

Ro 12:-1-2 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, [which is] your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what [is] that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

C. Prioritized by the scriptures (not doing something for the Lord or getting something from the Lord, but giving of ourselves to the Lord)

Matt. 22:35-38 Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying, Master, which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment.

II. SPIRITUAL REVELATION FROM THE LORD 1:1 "the Lord spoke unto Joshua"

De 31:7 And Moses called unto Joshua, and said unto him in the sight of all Israel, Be strong and of a good courage: for thou must go with this people unto the land which the LORD hath sworn unto their fathers to give them; and thou shalt cause them to inherit it.

De 34:9 And Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom; for Moses had laid his hands upon him: and the children of Israel hearkened unto him, and did as the LORD commanded Moses.

A. Purpose 1:2, 5-6 (His glory)

Jos 24:31 And Israel served the LORD all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that overlived Joshua, and which had known all the works of the LORD, that he had done for Israel.

2Ti 1:9 Who hath saved us, and called [us] with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began,

Php 3:12-14 Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus. Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but [this] one thing [I do], forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

B. Plan 1:2-4 "go over this Jordan"

Ph 2:13 For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.

Joh 5:30 I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.

Joh 6:38 For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.

Joh 4:34 Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.

Joh 17:4 I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.

C. Presence 1:5, 9

III. GODLY RESPECT FOR THE LORD

Jos 5:14 And he said, Nay; but [as] captain of the host of the LORD am I now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship, and said unto him, What saith my lord unto his servant?

Which will result in:

A. Obedience 1:7-8

Nu 32:12 Save Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite, and Joshua the son of Nun: for they have wholly followed the LORD.

Jos 11:15 As the LORD commanded Moses his servant, so did Moses command Joshua, and so did Joshua; he left nothing undone of all that the LORD commanded Moses.

B. Commitment 1:10

C. Faithfulness 1:8

IV. RECEPTIVE RESPONSE TO THE LORD

Jos 24:15 And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that [were] on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.

A. The foundation it provides

B. The fruit it produces

C. The faith it projects

Heb 11:13 These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of [them], and embraced [them], and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. {in faith: Gr. according to faith}

V. CONSISTENT RELIANCE UPON THE LORD

1Pe 4:19 Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls [to him] in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator.

VI. SINCERE REPENTANCE BEFORE THE LORD

A. Concern about sin

B. Confession of sin

C. Cleansing from sin
